The DFI has established a key partnership with Bookshare.org. Bookshare.org is the world’s largest online library for persons with print disabilities (www.bookshare.org). It has succeeded in creating a unique innovative e-library model where qualified print disabled users access books in formats useful to them. Bookshare.org uses a special exemption in the U.S. copyright law that permits the reproduction of publications into specialized formats for the disabled.

In partnering with the DFI, Bookshare India has become a member of the DFI. The partnership has been set to jointly approach the publishing community in India to help us replicate the model which has worked internationally. Bookshare has already established good linkages with the international publishing community who share their material for the online library. With the DFI-Bookshare India partnership we seek to replicate that experience with the Indian Publishing houses and community.

In the mean time Bookshare.org has also launched their Indian Membership campaign by partnering with three organisations currently in India. The Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC), St.Xavier’s College for the Western India region www.xrcvc.org, Worth Trust in Southern India www.worthtrust.org.in and Saksham Trust for Northern India www.saksham.org

All these three organisations will regulate registration of Indian print disabled persons who seek to become members of Bookshare.org. The membership would entitle the users to access books for which DFI-Bookshare will jointly work to get permissions and create the same in accessible formats as also the titles with international permissions
